Supervillain Spotify

I use Spotify to find music I like, and I assumed they’d pay a portion of my subscription fee to the artists I listen to most, but apparently not…

(T_T)

Spotify for musicians feels a lot like Kindle Unlimited for novelists or Webtoon for comics. These apps make it easy for people to discover art, but they’re usually built by business people, not artists. They know creators are desperate to be seen, and they take advantage of that. In the end, it’s the platform (not the artist) that benefits most. By the time artists realize it, the platform is already so big that if you’re not on it, you risk fading into obscurity.

Nevertheless, I’ve seen artists who can leverage these apps and find other ways to make money, just don’t rely on them as your only source of income to sustain your art.
